Everyone can have some questions
What should I most keep in mind when doing yoga?
Listen to and respect your body - listen to and respect your body - listen to and respect your body! No matter how skilled our instructors, the most important guide in your yoga practice will always be you. Your body will tell you when to slow down, speed up, back off, or go deeper. Please respect that guidance even if it may go against what the instructor or fellow students are saying or doing.
ETIQUETTE
What is basic studio etiquette at Namaskar YOGA?
Is the studio always open?
It is not. The studio opens approx. 15 mins before the beginning of each scheduled class. There are blocks of time, especially in the afternoon, when the studio is closed and no one is there.
When should I arrive for class?
If this is your first time at the studio, it is recommended that you arrive at least 5-10 mins prior to class, so you can check in and get oriented. Even if this is your 100th time at the studio, though, it’s always nice to get in a few minutes early, set up, socialize with fellow students or just relax a bit.
What if I arrive late to class?
Although we do not prefer it, we do allow late arrivals. We lock the door during class. If you arrive and the door is locked please knock gently and someone should come out and help you. Please set yourself up as quickly and quietly as possible.
What if I have to leave early?
No problem. Just let your teacher know ahead of time. Prior to leaving, take at least five minutes to rest on your back in the final resting pose (savasana) and please leave as inconspicuously as possible.
Can I leave my mat at the studio?
You are welcome to leave you mat at the studio at your own risk. There is storage space in the front foyer. We allow students to leave mats who are regularly attending classes. If a mat is left at the studio unused for more than 2 months it will be removed.
Can I bring my things into the studio space with me?
Coats and shoes can be left in the foyer. We recommend bringing valuables into the studio space with you.
Do you accept credit cards?
Yes, we accept Master Card and Visa as well as personal checks and good, old-fashioned cash.
STARTING OUT
Do I need to pre-register for class?
Preregistration is necessary for in-person classes and workshops.
What if I need to cancel a class?
Cancelations must be made at least 60 mins. prior to any class to retain class credit. Do do so, sign into your account > my registrations > find your class > cancel.
Can I eat before coming to class?
A good rule of thumb is to refrain from eating at least two hours before class. It’s generally recommended that you practice yoga on an empty stomach. Your body will thank you for it!
Which classes are appropriate for me?
Our class descriptions give a good idea of how classes will be run, what you can generally expect and for what level they are appropriate. Feel free to call with any further questions: 773.472.0930.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing. However, nothing too baggy for a couple reasons. First, trying to keep your t-shirt from falling over your face in some positions can get irritating. And, second (and even more important), your teacher needs to be able to see your body alignment during poses to ensure safety. Bare feet are best.
What should I bring?
Community mats, as well as blocks, straps, blankets and bolsters, are all available for your use. However, if you have your own mat, it is recommended you bring it with you. A towel may be a good idea if you sweat a lot - or intend to… We have filtered water but if you feel the need to drink during class, your own water bottle might be useful.
HEALTH
If I have a current/past injury or condition, can I practice yoga?
This depends. To be on the safe side you should consult with your physician prior to initiating classes. Please make certain to inform your instructor of your condition prior to class. This way he/she can guide your practice in the safest and most beneficial manner.
Can I practice yoga when I’m menstruating?
Absolutely. However you might want to consider avoiding inverted postures. Please ask your instructor to suggest alternative poses. And as always please listen to your body – don’t hesitate to take breaks and use less effort if need be.
Can I practice yoga while pregnant?
Please consult with your physician prior to initiating yoga classes. If you receive a green light please inform your instructor of your condition prior to the start of class. This way he/she can guide your practice in the safest and most beneficial manner. Our Mindful Yoga classes are a great place for start if you have not practiced yoga before.
PARKING
Is street parking difficult?
Generally, no. There are metered spots in front of the studio on Southport and plenty of free parking in the neighborhood.
How do Cubs games affect the parking situation?
Night Cubs games can make parking a bit more challenging. If you have the time, we recommend leaving your car behind on these nights. There are no parking restrictions on day games, only more traffic to plan around.
