jody butterbach

Jody has been practicing yoga since 2001 and teaching since 2006.  Yoga has been an important part of her life – serving as a conduit to opening both her mind and body.  It was through a regular yoga practice that Jody began to really think about her own happiness and how best to achieve it.  She left the corporate world at the end of 2005, and looks back on that time of her life with gratitude for the friends made and the lessons learned.  Now, she is enjoying this new stage of her life, with all its rewards and challenges, and especially finds joy in teaching fun and inspirational classes at Namaskar Yoga.

favorite quote:

“Security is mostly a superstition.  It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.  Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure.  Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”  - Helen Keller.

your first contact with yoga:

Bikram/hot yoga, back in 2001.   I had never felt more challenged, sweaty, and free in my life then after a Bikram class!  I became insatiable where yoga was concerned, branching out to Ashtanga and Anusara, and other hatha flow classes.  Finally, my search brought me to Vancouver Island, where I completed a hatha yoga teacher training course.

best song to downward dog to:

I love playing music in my classes, usually a mix of popular and more traditional ‘yoga’ music.  I don’t have a favorite song - it depends on my mood...  Music can speak to us on a visceral level, and when combined with the physicality, breath and intention of yoga, the combination can be brilliant and moving.

what inspires you to want to get out of bed in the morning?

I’m a morning person by nature.  A bright sunny morning and the smell of coffee brewing will do the trick every time!

3 favorite foods:

sushi, chocolate chip cookies, guacamole (but not together!)

3 million dollars, guaranteed success, what would you do?:

Hmmm….buy a yoga studio?
